OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) is premiering the first episode of their new docu-series, Rebuilding Black Wall Street hosted by Morris Chestnut. It’s a powerful series that I would love for you to share with your audiences.

HISTORY

Tulsa, OK (September 29, 2023)– Tuesday night, the Greenwood Community Center stood as a powerful symbol of resilience and the unyielding spirit of hope as an enthusiastic gathering convened to celebrate the premiere of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network’s groundbreaking series. 

The event previewed the first episode of this uplifting renovation docuseries chronicling the reconstruction of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, devastated during the 1921 massacre. 

SHOW TIME

Premiering this Friday, September 29 at 9/8c, host Morris Chestnut and expert build teams led by HGTV’s Jon Pierre and Mary Tjon-Joe-Pin guide viewers through the district’s history and the personal journeys of the featured cast, many of whom are descendants of Black Wall Street residents. 

KEY PARTICIPANTS

Key participants in the celebration included Executive Producers and creators, Ri-Karlo Handy and Karra Duncan, who also moderated the evening. Their insightful discussions shed light on the series’ significance and the importance of honoring the Greenwood District’s legacy.

However, The attendees included cast members and descendants of the Greenwood District, adding a personal touch to the celebration:

  • Montika Collins (Founder – Given Women’s Health Oasis & Birth Center & 
  • Cast Member, RBWS), sharing her vision for a birthing center in North Tulsa;
  • Victor Luckerson (Historian/Author, “Built From The Fire“), reflecting on the series’ exploration of history and resilience;
  • Michelle Brown-Burdex (Greenwood Cultural Center), illustrating the importance of preserving homeownership history;
  • AJ Johnson (Owner, Oasis Fresh Market & Cast Member, RBWS), emphasizing the significance of empowering the community;
  • Rachel Walker (Cast Member, RBWS), preserving her family’s legacy and history through renovation;
  • Lael Alexander (Founder/CEO, Noitavonne & Cast Member, RBWS), offering tech innovations for community progress;
  • Rodney and Sheila Clark (Owners, Clark-Asberry Homestead Ranch & Cast Members, RBWS), exemplifying efforts to combat food deserts in North Tulsa; and
  • Amber and Chuck Oputa (1256 Movement), are passionate about revitalizing the community.

LEGACY

Duncan, who is a descendant of the Greenwood District, added, “The stories shared in this series are not just history; they are a beacon for our community to rebuild, unite, and thrive once more.”

However, the series is produced by Sunwise Media with Ri-Karlo Handy and Karra Duncan, a Tulsa Race Massacre descendant, serving as executive producers.

Furthermore, Morris Chestnut also serves as executive producer through his MC8 Productions, as well as Greenwood Creative Studios.
