Meet Keith Wright -Music Producer

Keith Wright is a talented music producer, Recording Academy’s Class of 2026 engineer, and a member of Dope Producer United.

Hello Keith, how are you? I’m doing well, thank you for asking.

Where are you from? Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but raised in North Carolina.

How was life growing up? Life was always interesting since I grew up in a military family. We traveled to different states to see family and when my dad received orders to new duty stations. The one constant was music. My dad had a very large record collection, so we heard all kinds of music from rock to blues, classical, jazz, funk, and gospel.

What is your opinion on the music scene in North Carolina? North Carolina has a very diverse music scene. There are plenty of artist, like Charlie Daniels and Luke Combs, Ben Folds and Fred Durst, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, RnB giants Anthony Hamilton, Fantasia, Jodeci, Roberta Flack, and rap stars DaBaby, J. Cole, Little Brother, and Rapsody. North Carolina has music running through our state like the railroad tracks.

When did you discover music, and do you remember the first song you heard? Man, the furthest music memory I have is a picture of me as a toddler with a pair of headphones, sitting next to a Heatwave “Too Hot To Handle” vinyl record cover. My dad was a bass player and was always playing along with records in his collection.

Why did you become a producer? I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have melodies and song ideas running around in my head. It made sense to me to start taking those ideas and making songs out of them. After making songs for my family band and me, I started doing the same for others, and next thing I know, I’m working on full-blown movie projects and artists’ albums.

Did anyone inspire you to become a producer? I’ve had plenty of producers that I admired coming up: Quincy Jones, George Clinton, Stanley Clark, 9th Wonder, but I must say the biggest inspiration to become a producer is from my dad and family. I was blessed to have instruments and recording equipment in our home at an early age. Our house was the spot my dad brought fellow musicians to, and we would cut songs in our family studio in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

How long have you been producing music? Since around 1993. I was already in high school, and my dad would come up with song ideas that started as jam sessions. We would then structure those sessions into song format so it made sense to outside listeners. We used a Roland VS-2480 digital recording system to capture and then burn it to CDs so we could listen to our music in the Sony stereo with HMP-100 and HMP-300 speakers in the family room.

What is in your playlist? I have different playlists for different tasks. My day-to-day consists of some independent artists that I’ve had the honor to work with, such as Crown Vega, D-Liberate, Yulla, Brendalynn McKinney, Corey Ronell, TrePeace, Chilly Mack, to name a few. My motivation playlist has anyone from LL Cool J, The Roots, Erykah Badu, DJ Quick, Common, Black Starr, Lucy Pearl, and so many others.

Do you work digital or analog? I started on analog with real instruments and amps and later transitioned to digital.

Do you have a favorite VST? The most underrated VST is SKY Keys. Every producer should have this in their toolbox.

What is your favorite Hardware to use? My go-to right now is the Akai MPK261. Being an Ableton Live user, it maps all my transport controls naturally.

Have you collaborated with other DJS and Producers? Yes, I’ve collaborated with many producers. In fact, I host an organization, Dope Producers United, whose purpose is to assist the development of beat makers and music producers since 2020.

Ableton Live (12) hands down.

Tell us about the producer group? Dope Producers United (DPU) is an organization for music producers who want to grow, learn more about the music business, and constantly challenge themselves with outside-the-box thinking.

Can you briefly describe your experience as a DJ? Including the types of events you’ve worked on? I’ve only served as an official DJ at one event, and I only count it because I got paid with food!

What genres of music are you most comfortable producing, and do you have a signature style? Those who know me label me an R&B producer, but I produce records for the client I’m servicing. I’ve done pop, hip-hop, country, and gospel records.

How do you prepare for a studio session? I ask every new client a series of questions to get a clear read on their vision. I follow that with a request for music references to understand what sound they are trying to pull from. The rest is making sure the studio is ready for guests if it’s an in-person session or making sure they have the correct equipment for virtual sessions.

Have you ever faced technical issues during a live studio session, and how did you handle them? Once in a studio in Atlanta back in 2024. I thought one of my Pro Tools sessions was saved to my local hard drive, and guess what… it didn’t! Since then, I double-check and triple-check that the session files are on my portable drive and open the session in my travel laptop prior to leaving the studio. Let’s just say I’ve never had that happen to me again.

Are you a part of any producer clubs or groups? Shout out to DPU, the Cookout, Sync Residuals, and the Tribe!

What is your backup plan in case of equipment failure? In my studio, I maintain 3 systems (1 pc desktop, 1 pc laptop, and a Mac mini). I also have 4 audio interfaces and several microphones. If all of that goes down mid-session, then the building is on fire!

Do you manage any artists? Currently, I do not manage any artists, but I selectively collaborate with artists.

Do you have any upcoming projects? Just released a single with Yulla called “Is It Too Early,” which is streaming on all platforms, and about 5 songs are included on the Cookout Rap and RnB albums.

You are now a voting member of the Grammys. Tell us about that. Yes, I was blessed and honored to be accepted into the Recording Academy class of 2026. I’m still learning how everything works and the proper processes. I want to say congratulations to all my fellow 2026 classmates! This will be my first opportunity to vote on projects for the 2027 Grammys! I’m again excited and honored.

People complain about the Grammy picks. Diversity is important so artists get a fair chance. I think many don’t understand that the Grammys are the only award platform where you have industry professionals voting on their peers’ projects across different categories. You don’t get unlimited votes, so you do have to choose wisely!

Why is it important for you to be a member of the Academy? I plan on growing my internal network with the Recording Academy and assisting in the fight for equal compensation for artist/creators in the current age of streaming.

What goals do you have for working as a voting member? Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? In 5 years, I believe I will grow to an elected office within my Grammy chapter (Atlanta). I would love to continue advocating for creators and mentoring those who don’t understand how to grow in their music career.

What tips do you have for new DJs? DJs, PLEASE keep working with independent artists and producers! You keep each other relevant in this current state of music. People are always looking to hear new music; who better than their DJ!
